BOSTON — How about that for a statement?
The Cavaliers rallied from a double-digit second-half deficit to stun the Boston Celtics in overtime on Friday night, 132-123.
On the road, in a hostile environment, without their All-Star point guard, against the reigning Eastern Conference champions, the frisky Cavaliers got the start they needed.
They scored the first six points and then quickly built a double-digit lead. Taking advantage of their size and pulverizing the undersized Celtics inside, Cleveland led 22-9 at one point.
It was an early haymaker that stunned last year’s Finals participant.
But Boston swung back. By the end of the first quarter, despite Cleveland dominating for the first 11:59, the Celtics had their first lead — a Sam Hauser end-of-quarter, 3-point buzzer-beater that sent the sellout crowd into frenzy.
The second quarter was all Boston. It outscored the Cavs 41-29 while shooting a sizzling 14-of-20 from the field and 6-of-9 from 3-point range. It was an ugly, choppy, physical, flowless whistlefest. Just the way Boston likes it. At one point the Celtics had pushed their lead to a game-high 15 points, as Cleveland’s No. 2 ranked defense turned leaky, with no answers for Boston’s surgical, attack-minded offense.
That quarter seemed like the fateful turning point. Not quite.
The gutsy Cavs came storming back in the third. They stiffened on defense. Made timely shots on offense. Outworked the East champs. Gave themselves a chance going into the fourth quarter. That’s all they could’ve asked for early in the season.
The two teams traded punches in the fourth. The Celtics took a one-point lead with 28 seconds remaining on Jaylen Brown’s driving left-handed layup. The Celtics crowd sensed it. Just one stop. But the Cavs stayed poised. They ran their offense and All-Star center Jarrett Allen was fouled on a shot attempt at the rim. He split the pair, evening up the game.
Boston put the ball in Jayson Tatum’s hands. He worked one-on-one against Dean Wade at the right elbow. With the clock ticking down, Tatum airballed the potential game-winning fadeaway jumper, sending the game into overtime.
Behind Caris LeVert and Donovan Mitchell, the Cavs finally delivered the knockout blow. They won those five minutes, 18-9.
LeVert, looking the part of last year’s midseason acquisition who was once labeled the missing piece, scored 41 points on 12 of 21 from the field, 6 of 8 from 3-point range and 11 of 12 from the free-throw line. Eleven of those points came in OT.
Mitchell matched LeVert with 41 of his own. Second-year phenom Evan Mobley added 19 points. Allen chipped in with 12 points and 11 rebounds, another double-double.
The Celtics were led by Tatum and Brown, who poured in 32 points apiece.
