Vettel and then Raikkonen hit the top of the timesheet in quick succession, with Kimi clocking a 1:05.711.

Vettel goes again and, after making his way past Raikkonen, the German clocks a new fastest final sector to nudge a tenth ahead of his team-mate on the timesheet.

Ferrari remain one and two, with Mercedes and Red Bull yet to join the party.

Martin Brundle is down at the tricky Turn Four and, just as he starts to explain how difficult the braking zone is, a Sauber duly locks up and runs straight on in to the gravel behind him.

That's 0.3s up on Vettel on the same soft tyres.

The risk of rain in this session is 60%, and dark clouds are looming ominously overhead.

Teams will hope the rain holds off as they look ahead to the longer runs in the second half of this session.

The Red Bull Ring kerbs have claimed another victim:

"Fernando Alonso is currently missing this session," reports Ted Kravitz.

"He damaged the floor on the kerbs and they're having to replace it."

Max Verstappen has already had a go on the ultrasoft tyres and now team-mate Daniel Ricciardo is doing likewise.

But even the fastest tyres can't put the RB14 close to the W09 - Ricciardo ends up 0.6s adrift!

They're still optimistic of catching Renault for fourth this season but to do so Force India will have to be much higher than P13 and P16 come tomorrow and Sunday.

Sergio Perez is behind Esteban Ocon at the moment, and he detailed how you have to produce the "perfect" lap at the Red Bull Ring to impress.

"It’s quite technical this place," he said. "Just missing half a tenth is enough to get you out of position, so you have to be quite perfect on Saturday around here.

"You have a lot of elevations, a lot of braking downhill, it's easy to lock, it’s very difficult to see the apexes. It’s not as straightforward as people might think."
