“This track is incredible. It’s unbelievable how fast it is around this track. I think for a single lap, it’s going to be incredible.”

Lewis Hamilton was certainly enthused by Imola on his F1 debut around the historic circuit which makes its return after 14 years away from the calendar.

"It’s phenomenal to drive, it’s really incredibly fast," added Hamilton, who set the pace in that aforementioned practice.

But could Max Verstappen be a contender for pole position?

He finished 0.3s off Hamilton in practice but led for much of that 90-minute session, and didn't have a second 'push' lap like Hamilton.

"It's hard to beat Mercedes but we are not too far away," Verstappen told Sky F1's Ted Kravitz a little earlier this morning.

That's Mercedes' record as far as pole positions go in this rapid-fire season, with their sequence of Saturday victories actually stretching back an additional race to Abu Dhabi last December.

Even Mercedes have never managed an 100% clean sweep of poles through an F1 season before - a feat never achieved by any team in F1 history, as it happens.

Time running out for Albon

"If Red Bull want to go back to challenging Mercedes for the world title, the decision over their second seat is absolutely critical."

That was the sign off from Karun Chandhok just now in a feature aired on Sky F1 ahead of qualifying looking at the driver market and what's left up for grabs for 2021.

Christian Horner effectively admitted at the start of last weekend that Alex Albon had two races to cement his seat next to Max Verstappen for next year - Portimao and here at Imola.

But after Portugal turned out to be a fairly disastrous Sunday for Albon, the pressure has undoubtedly ramped up for him to perform here over the next 24 hours.

On a track that's hard to overtake, it all begins with a crucial qualifying hour.

Twenty-six years on from F1's darkest weekend, Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger remain in the thoughts of all on F1's return to Imola.

 Here we go then, F1 qualifying is underway at Imola!

Green light for the 18-minute Q1 segment, after which five drivers will be eliminated from the session.
