Love this part on MJ.
"You’d get the scouting report and it would basically say, “Good luck.”"

"His mentality wasn’t just to score a lot of points. He wanted to crush your soul." I will never, ever get tired of reading quotes exactly like that.

Get it tattooed on your arm so you can read it any time you want.

How to guard MJ: drop your shorts and bend over. It'll be over in 48 minutes.

His comment about MJ being the easiest to guard on that list is interesting. At first, you're raising your eyebrows but you can see where he's coming from. MJ didn't overwhelm you with his athleticism or his physicality (even though he was an athletic freak and strong for his size), it was more mental than anything else.

MJ is also the most fundamentally sound. He never practiced those crazy layups...he did them because being in the right position all the time allows him to get that split second timing to throw up a prayer (or what looks like one...his body control gives him the ability to finish). His footwork...I can watch videos all day of how he sets up his defender with his feet.

Interesting that Gary Payton said something similar a few years ago when he said John Stockton was harder to guard than Michael Jordan.

The "Five toughest players to defend" series is probably my favorite series that Players Tribune puts out. Always super interesting articles.

Yea great to hear it from the players perspective. I'd love to read one written by James harden looool

Five easiest players to bait into a foul.

I think curry would be up there. Everytime harden is on curry seems to end in a foul.

True that. It's infuriating.

I'm curious as to what the current scout report looks like for guys like Russel Westbrook , or like Harden.
[–]Raptorssaintscanucks 32 指標 8 天前
I imagine Curry, IT, etc is probably on like everybody's list. Quick guys that you need to chase and stay super tight to are always the worst to defend in my inillustrious YMCA career and I'd assume the NBA

Curry would be like Reggie Miller on steroids except he can pull up from 35 feet out instead of 27.

I'd say Klay is like Reggie on roids. Klay is bigger and stronger than Reggie and runs great routes around screens. I believe he's #1 is miles ran per game. Steph is in a different mold.

I would guess Harden and Westbrook are probably the two toughest players to guard in the league if you asked a lot of guards. Westbrook is just an athletic freak and still bigger/stronger than a lot of opposing PGs while Harden has the size and all his crafty moves.

This was a great read. I was never really mad about Starks when he played but he always played above his size though, I gotta give him that.
[–]KnicksLiquid_Senjutsu 15 指標 8 天前
He was the heart and soul of that team. Some Knicks fans still shit on him for that infamous 2-18 performance in game 7, but we never would have been there in the first place without him. My favorite player to this day.

I used to use Starks vs Alan Houston as an argument about the type of player you want. Do you want someone like Starks - intense, can fire up the rest of the team, though sometimes that emotion could take him out of his game. Or do you want Houston - calm, more reliable, but does less to inspire his team-mates? The answer I generally got was, 'What are you talking about, I don't even watch basketball'

Starks played in an era of extremely skilled centers (Olajuwon, Shaq, Admiral, Ewing,, and to the lesser extent Mutombo, Smits, Seikaly and Daughtery), but also some of the best shooting guards ever.
Besides the guys he mentioned, there were really good 2-guards in Thunder Dan, Hornacek, Ron Harper, Petrovic, Jim Jackson, Kendall Gill, Hershey Hawkins, Reggie Lewis among others that you don't see their mold in the league right now.

How dare you leave out Joe Dumars.
