What do folks put Bari’s extension at? He’s the best shooter of the core 7 and he’s become one of our best defenders. He’s still one of the youngest guys on the team, and he’s the tallest of our core. Certainly limited athletically, but getting stronger every season. I think Bari is a must to extend. I put him around $30 mil per.

However, for me, that is my anticipated best production from him. At this point, to get that, he’ll need to show-out in the playoffs.
I think Stone will get him for less now, or by attaching incentives.

Jabari being the best shooter out of the core 7 is so incredibly sad…he’s not even an average shooter

He's actually been pretty much dead-average on 3P% for a power forward this season--35.4% (league-wide it's 35.5% for PFs). However, he takes 4.8 three pointers per game, versus the league average for power forwards of 3.4 attempts. So when you factor in volume, I'd say he's a little bit above-average for his position right now.
Considering he's only 21, and his 3P% was actually a little bit better last season, I feel pretty confident he'll be a good shooter. I don't know if he'll be a great one like he was supposed to be.

fwiw: he’s having an outlier year shooting poorly on corner threes: 11-37 — 29.7%. (That won’t last)
Last year he shot 46% from corner, 34% ATB.
So, even despite the poor start, he’s improved and well-above league average on above-the-break threes shooting 37%. And like we did with Ariza, we need him out of the corner, so other lessor shooters can take that easier spot.

I think you're right about his open market value, but we do have a little bit of leverage in the whole "if you want an extension right now, this is the deal". There's always risk in playing another season of NBA basketball--he could have a down season, he could get hurt and miss a bunch of games, worst case he could even have a career-altering injury (I hope not, knock on wood). And when a guy hasn't gotten his first big contract yet, that risk is magnified--it's hard to turn down something like $125M when it's staring you in the face.

He’s not really good at anything on offense. His job is to stand in the corner. Poor ball handler with poor basketball IQ. He’s had exactly 33 assists in 33 games. He’s nothing special as a rebounder. I like what he does on defense at times, but he’s not the most physically tuff defender.
He’s nice to have in the rotation, and he’s a plus when hitting his three pointers. But, I’m not too excited about paying him anything north of 20mill per year. I know others are more enthusiastic about Jabari, but we can’t pay everyone and I’m not sure Jabari is one I want to pay.

I like Tari but I think it's starting to really look like he's a bad fit given our current needs. We have plenty of defenders, we need shooting and playmaking. If we could trade him straight-up for a young-ish, plus shooter/solid-average defender and playmaker I think I might do it. Coby White? Austin Reaves?

We should be able to keep Tari at a value, and that will be good for everyone. You keep Tari.

The tendencies of the rookie extension market are that Jabari and especially Tari are the type of players who get value contracts: low usage, limited offensive creation, missed time due to injury, not flashy, perceived as career role players.
Jalen and Sengun are the type of players who tend to get overpaid: high usage, buzzy, limited portability offensive "stars" who are in "potential franchise player" conversations (however unlikely).
And the dynamics of our team situation and internal leverage are favorable enough that even Jalen and Sengun were extended for less than the world expected. That internal leverage is even stronger in Jabari and Tari's case.
My expectation: ~$25M AAV/5 yrs for Jabari, ~$18M AAV/5 yrs for Tari.
Remember, both will have strong motivation to put pen to paper on extensions as soon as possible this summer because it protects them from being included in any trade going out this summer, and cements them as long term parts of a "core" in Houston. Being trade bait for a star would create uncertainty about their big payday. They / their agents don't want that.

I think Jabari has been improving, but he’s still relatively average at everything offensively and can’t really create for others.
If he becomes and absolute knock down shooter then maybe we get into a high aav, but otherwise I’m good moving him for a star.

The correct answer is that we should not give him an extension at all. We should see how he plays next season then sign him to a contract based upon that performance.
Everyone who says he deserves more than $20 million per year on an extension is basing that upon his potential. Jabari has the potential to be an excellent defensive player and a 40 percent 3-point shooter. He is neither of those things currently. He has never been an average starter in the NBA. Not even close. He is useful but not great defensively. He was shooting .354 from three this season prior to the injury. He was at .363 last season. He does nothing else offensively other than shoot 3s. A lot of those are open looks as he is the 5th option among the starters. Those percentages are really mediocre. Jalen Green gets a lot of hate on this board with similar efficiency. Jalen brings a lot more offensively than Jabari does. I think Jalen still has the potential to become an all-star. I don't believe Jabari does.
I like Jabari's potential and hope he comes back and plays well. I hope he continues to grow next season. Extending him based upon potential would be the same stupid move Stone made this past summer with Jalen Green. It limits our options. We're better off watching Jabari play next season and matching his contract to his performance next year. He will be a restricted free agent so we can match any offer he receives. Not many teams even try to make offers on restricted free agents. We should also preserve the option of including him in a trade for an upgrade should the right target come available.

I don't know what the Rockets offer, but assuming Jabari finish the season at slightly higher than his current stats, 13/7/1 with high level defense he showed before his injury, get his TS% up a bit to the .58 range that make him average in the league, I don't think he accepts any offer less than 5/$150mil. In fact, I'm not even sure he'd accept that, but there's no way he accepts any offer with AAV under $30mil. These days 3&D type players who are indeed good enough in both areas get paid a lot. Even if they're not stars.

I think this is where the league is gonna go eventually. The contracts has gotten so high that, the extra money a player gets by testing the market, is not worth the injury risk. Stone used it wisely with Sengun and Green, and I believe they were good deals both for the team and the players. Other teams did not and i think it was a mistake on their part. I am anticipating that the same will happen with Jabari and we will keep him in the 25-30 million range, probably closer to 25.

Jabari has the best defensive rating of anyone on this team with 105.9, so when people discount his defense I don't get their logic. Unless of course you thing defensive ratings are meaningless. Not only that, he's one of our best 3 PT shooters. I think a lot of people underestimate his value to this team, and don't have as much faith as I do that he will get better each year.

Defensive rating is a primitive advanced stat that doesn't account for competition and depends upon the other 4 guys on the floor- in this case Jabari's teammates. Our schedule became significantly harder when Jabari was injured then FVV became hurt and that crippled us on both sides of the floor.

So, overall, average defensively.
He has the potential to be terrific defensively. Great size, long arms and good lateral movement for a big. He's just not there yet.

I still love Bari, but I would be surprised if he gets paid as much as Jalen. Jalen is highly inconsistent, but he's at least dominant for stretches. Bari has never shown any ability to be dominant. Thus far, he's been nothing more than a role player. And this injury isn't helping his case, even if it is kind of a fluke thing.

He was supposed to be an elite shooter coming out of college. Together with defense, that's how he was projected to be the #1 pick until Orlando changed their mind right before the draft. His shooting was very disappointing during the rookie year. Now he has been shooting at 36% for 1.5 seasons, I'm not sure if he will ever turn into a 40+% shooter. But who knows. And I believe he still has some unexplored territory on offense such as a midrange or a low post game.
I guess what he will be offered will depend on how he performs the rest of the season and more importantly in the playoffs. He seems to have some mental blocks when it comes to high pressure situations.

I don't recall these mental blocks in high pressure situations. He rarely touches the ball in the fourth quarter as Ime goes to Jalen, FVV, and Sengun almost exclusively. Jabari is the youngest of our core and has continued to improve in the role he is given. This year's injury was extremely disappointing as he was playing at the highest level of his career and shooting over 40% from 3 after a slow start.
Ime offensive coaching this year has been abysmal even during our ascension to the 2nd seed (weak schedule and fortuitous injuries to our competitors). Jabari's injury forced him to insert Amen in the starting line-up. To his credit, he started to move FVV off the ball more often and the result was a temporary explosion on offense. When FVV got hurt, we had nobody other than Dillon that could hit a 3 pointer and the offense has grounded to a halt. If we get FVV and Jabari back, we will see if Ime can take advantage of the knowledge he got for that short span after Amen got the starting job and FVV going down or if he will revert to JVG style offense. If he moves Amen back to the bench in favor of Dillon Brooks, he deserves every bit of criticism he is currently getting and Jabari will continue to have pedestrian offensive production.

He's actually been pretty much dead-average on 3P% for a power forward this season--35.4% (league-wide it's 35.5% for PFs). However, he takes 4.8 three pointers per game, versus the league average for power forwards of 3.4 attempts. So when you factor in volume, I'd say he's a little bit above-average for his position right now.
Considering he's only 21, and his 3P% was actually a little bit better last season, I feel pretty confident he'll be a good shooter. I don't know if he'll be a great one like he was supposed to be.

Last year he shot 46% from corner, 34% ATB.
So, even despite the poor start, he’s improved and well-above league average on above-the-break threes shooting 37%. And like we did with Ariza, we need him out of the corner, so other lessor shooters can take that easier spot.

I think you're right about his open market value, but we do have a little bit of leverage in the whole "if you want an extension right now, this is the deal". There's always risk in playing another season of NBA basketball--he could have a down season, he could get hurt and miss a bunch of games, worst case he could even have a career-altering injury (I hope not, knock on wood). And when a guy hasn't gotten his first big contract yet, that risk is magnified--it's hard to turn down something like $125M when it's staring you in the face.

He’s not really good at anything on offense. His job is to stand in the corner. Poor ball handler with poor basketball IQ. He’s had exactly 33 assists in 33 games. He’s nothing special as a rebounder. I like what he does on defense at times, but he’s not the most physically tuff defender.

The tendencies of the rookie extension market are that Jabari and especially Tari are the type of players who get value contracts: low usage, limited offensive creation, missed time due to injury, not flashy, perceived as career role players.
Jalen and Sengun are the type of players who tend to get overpaid: high usage, buzzy, limited portability offensive "stars" who are in "potential franchise player" conversations (however unlikely).
And the dynamics of our team situation and internal leverage are favorable enough that even Jalen and Sengun were extended for less than the world expected. That internal leverage is even stronger in Jabari and Tari's case.
My expectation: ~$25M AAV/5 yrs for Jabari, ~$18M AAV/5 yrs for Tari.
Remember, both will have strong motivation to put pen to paper on extensions as soon as possible this summer because it protects them from being included in any trade going out this summer, and cements them as long term parts of a "core" in Houston. Being trade bait for a star would create uncertainty about their big payday. They / their agents don't want that.

The correct answer is that we should not give him an extension at all. We should see how he plays next season then sign him to a contract based upon that performance.
Everyone who says he deserves more than $20 million per year on an extension is basing that upon his potential. Jabari has the potential to be an excellent defensive player and a 40 percent 3-point shooter. He is neither of those things currently. He has never been an average starter in the NBA. Not even close. He is useful but not great defensively. He was shooting .354 from three this season prior to the injury. He was at .363 last season. He does nothing else offensively other than shoot 3s. A lot of those are open looks as he is the 5th option among the starters. Those percentages are really mediocre. Jalen Green gets a lot of hate on this board with similar efficiency. Jalen brings a lot more offensively than Jabari does. I think Jalen still has the potential to become an all-star. I don't believe Jabari does.
I like Jabari's potential and hope he comes back and plays well. I hope he continues to grow next season. Extending him based upon potential would be the same stupid move Stone made this past summer with Jalen Green. It limits our options. We're better off watching Jabari play next season and matching his contract to his performance next year. He will be a restricted free agent so we can match any offer he receives. Not many teams even try to make offers on restricted free agents. We should also preserve the option of including him in a trade for an upgrade should the right target come available.

I don't know what the Rockets offer, but assuming Jabari finish the season at slightly higher than his current stats, 13/7/1 with high level defense he showed before his injury, get his TS% up a bit to the .58 range that make him average in the league, I don't think he accepts any offer less than 5/$150mil. In fact, I'm not even sure he'd accept that, but there's no way he accepts any offer with AAV under $30mil. These days 3&D type players who are indeed good enough in both areas get paid a lot. Even if they're not stars.

I think this is where the league is gonna go eventually. The contracts has gotten so high that, the extra money a player gets by testing the market, is not worth the injury risk. Stone used it wisely with Sengun and Green, and I believe they were good deals both for the team and the players. Other teams did not and i think it was a mistake on their part. I am anticipating that the same will happen with Jabari and we will keep him in the 25-30 million range, probably closer to 25.

Jabari has the best defensive rating of anyone on this team with 105.9, so when people discount his defense I don't get their logic. Unless of course you thing defensive ratings are meaningless. Not only that, he's one of our best 3 PT shooters. I think a lot of people underestimate his value to this team, and don't have as much faith as I do that he will get better each year.

Defensive rating is a primitive advanced stat that doesn't account for competition and depends upon the other 4 guys on the floor- in this case Jabari's teammates. Our schedule became significantly harder when Jabari was injured then FVV became hurt and that crippled us on both sides of the floor.

He has the potential to be terrific defensively. Great size, long arms and good lateral movement for a big. He's just not there yet.

I still love Bari, but I would be surprised if he gets paid as much as Jalen. Jalen is highly inconsistent, but he's at least dominant for stretches. Bari has never shown any ability to be dominant. He was supposed to be an elite shooter coming out of college. Together with defense, that's how he was projected to be the #1 pick until Orlando changed their mind right before the draft. His shooting was very disappointing during the rookie year. Now he has been shooting at 36% for 1.5 seasons, I'm not sure if he will ever turn into a 40+% shooter. But who knows. And I believe he still has some unexplored territory on offense such as a midrange or a low post game.
I guess what he will be offered will depend on how he performs the rest of the season and more importantly in the playoffs. He seems to have some mental blocks when it comes to high pressure situations.

I don't recall these mental blocks in high pressure situations. He rarely touches the ball in the fourth quarter as Ime goes to Jalen, FVV, and Sengun almost exclusively. Jabari is the youngest of our core and has continued to improve in the role he is given. This year's injury was extremely disappointing as he was playing at the highest level of his career and shooting over 40% from 3 after a slow start.
Ime offensive coaching this year has been abysmal even during our ascension to the 2nd seed (weak schedule and fortuitous injuries to our competitors). Jabari's injury forced him to insert Amen in the starting line-up. To his credit, he started to move FVV off the ball more often and the result was a temporary explosion on offense. When FVV got hurt, we had nobody other than Dillon that could hit a 3 pointer and the offense has grounded to a halt. If we get FVV and Jabari back, we will see if Ime can take advantage of the knowledge he got for that short span after Amen got the starting job and FVV going down or if he will revert to JVG style offense. If he moves Amen back to the bench in favor of Dillon Brooks, he deserves every bit of criticism he is currently getting and Jabari will continue to have pedestrian offensive production.
