To me, this situation reminds me a little bit of when the Knicks were trying to contend during the end of the Carmelo Anthonyera when it was towards the latter part of his prime with a team that wasn’t close to competing for a championship. It’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole because you’ve got Dame in his prime. Jerami Grantis entering his prime. Jusuf Nurkicis in the prime years of his career. Then, you’ve got younger guys like Anfernee Simons, Shaedon Sharpeand younger rotation players around them.
Highkin: I think if he was to ask for it (a trade), which he’s not done yet. There’s no real indication that he’s going to as much as people want it to happen around the league – and that’s been a thing for three years. To me, when you’re a team in a market like Portland, and you have a guy who’s still an All-NBA level guy and still wants to be there and is as good as he is, I don’t know if the move is to say we have this guy who’s the greatest player in franchise history and still playing at a high level – let’s just trade him proactively to start over and maybe one day some of these things we get will turn into somebody as good as Dame. That’s always been more of a play when a team does that for a GM to preserve his job security because he’s starting a rebuild.

Down the line, you could have Scoot as your guy that’s the point guard of the future if you ultimately decide to move Dame or if he wants to ask out. I’m curious how they’ll use it in trade talks. My understanding is among Portland’s priorities it’s to improve its frontcourt size, I’m told.
Highkin: I think whatever they do is going to happen while they’re on the clock. It’s not impossible that they keep the pick and draft somebody while also keeping Dame. I think it’s very unlikely that’s the way it works out. I think everyone is pretty much telegraphing, both Dame, Joe Cronin, the general manager, and Chauncey Billupsat his exit interview. Everybody’s in lock step that they need to get more of a veteran roster and win-now type of guys around Dame. If they had gotten the No. 1 pick, they would’ve taken Victor Wembanyama, and that was the one guy where you feel like he’ll be ready right away to contend. With the situation being what it is was a huge win to move into the top three. I think they’re in pretty good shape to get somebody.

I think more draft evaluators that you talk to, and it’s not a 100 percent consensus, but the majority of people you talk to like Henderson more than Miller. This is also why Charlotte moving to No. 2 is significant because the rumor at the combine is that they really like Miller and feel like he’ll be a better long-term fit with LaMelo Ball.

Pascal Siakamis kind of a weird fit next to Grant, but talent-wise, I think that’s something they might be interested in if that was a possibility. Highkin: A name I’ve seen thrown out there as a Portland possible target is Anunoby. They like him, and they had pretty serious talks with Toronto around draft time about him, but they decided not to give up the seventh pick last year for Anunoby. I don’t see a world where a year later, they give up a third pick for him.

Highkin: I think it’s going to come in right around $30 million. That extension he’s eligible for was right around $27-28 million he turned down. The reason he turned down the extension was because he could get a fifth year and more money per year as a free agent. I think it’s going to come out around five years, $150 million, with probably a player option. I know he gets talked about as one of the top free agents on the market, but I’d expect that gets done pretty quickly. It might even be a 12:01 on June 30th type of signing. When they offered him the extension, and he turned it down, I’d be shocked if they hadn’t already started talking about what his next deal would look like. Dame said he expects Jerami to be back, and Jerami said he wants to be back, he’s comfortable here, and wants to be here. I’d expect that to get done pretty quickly.

His lead assistant Scott Brookswas in the mix for the Bucks’ job. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in Houston if James Harden goes back there because they have a relationship from back in the Oklahoma City days.
I think there will be some changes on the staff to maybe bring in some more experienced guys to help Chauncey along… I think the feeling in the organization is they still want to give him a shot with a real competitive roster. If they do make the roster moves that they want to make this summer and they go into next season underperforming, then I think, at that point, maybe they start looking at the head coaching position.

If they can get Reddish back for something like that or a deal with a bunch of partial guarantees, I think that’s something they’d be open to. I don’t think they’d commit much money to him.

If they had gotten the No. 1 pick, they would’ve taken Victor Wembanyama, and that was the one guy where you feel like he’ll be ready right away to contend. With the situation being what it is was a huge win to move into the top three. I think they’re in pretty good shape to get somebody.
I think it’s more likely that they trade the pick than they keep it. I think more draft evaluators that you talk to, and it’s not a 100 percent consensus, but the majority of people you talk to like Henderson more than Miller. This is also why Charlotte moving to No. 2 is significant because the rumor at the combine is that they really like Miller and feel like he’ll be a better long-term fit with LaMelo Ball.
They’ve figured out that Jerami Grantwas such a good fit next to Dame that they figured out the idea of athletic wings that can defend multiple positions, and they need more guys like Grant. In Chicago, I got a lot of questions about whether Zach LaVinecould be somebody they’re in play for with the No. 3 pick. I don’t think that’s something they’re really looking at. If Boston loses the series and decides not to pay Jaylen Brown, I think that’s something they’d look at. Pascal Siakamis kind of a weird fit next to Grant, but talent-wise, I think that’s something they might be interested in if that was a possibility. That type of player is more of what they’re looking at than the other stuff that’s out there.
Highkin: A name I’ve seen thrown out there as a Portland possible target is Anunoby. They like him, and they had pretty serious talks with Toronto around draft time about him, but they decided not to give up the seventh pick last year for Anunoby. I don’t see a world where a year later, they give up a third pick for him.

If that’s the case, does he fall in the $35 million range? What’s the sweet spot number for Grant while you’re trying to build around Lillard and retaining Grant as a core piece? Is it in the $30-35 million annual range? I think it’s in that range somewhere.

Highkin: I think it’s going to come in right around $30 million. That extension he’s eligible for was right around $27-28 million he turned down. The reason he turned down the extension was because he could get a fifth year and more money per year as a free agent. I think it’s going to come out around five years, $150 million, with probably a player option. I know he gets talked about as one of the top free agents on the market, but I’d expect that gets done pretty quickly. It might even be a 12:01 on June 30th type of signing. When they offered him the extension, and he turned it down, I’d be shocked if they hadn’t already started talking about what his next deal would look like. Dame said he expects Jerami to be back, and Jerami said he wants to be back, he’s comfortable here, and wants to be here. I’d expect that to get done pretty quickly.

I think they knew going into the second half of the season that they were going to have to make a decision long-term on Simons and Shaedon Sharpeas the long-term guard next to Dame. I think over the last month of the season, Shaedon made that decision for them.

The health stuff is always a concern with him, and conditioning has been a concern with him over the years.
The way that situation broke down was last season he was having the best year he was having since his leg injury a couple of years ago. They shut him down to tank. Klutch allowed them to shut him down to tank with some sort of back end we’ll take care of you (deal). That’s more where that contract came from than them feeling like he was their center of the future. I think Nurkic is someone they’re very open to moving.

Shaedon has three more years on a rookie deal. That’s someone they view firmly as a long-term piece of the future.

Highkin: As of right now, I think there’s still a lot of belief long-term in what he can be as a coach. I was a little bit surprised by Joe Cronin’shonesty from his exit interview. We made some good additions in our starting lineup, but I don’t think I did him any favors by giving him the lack of depth that would’ve given us any sustainability once we had some of these injuries.”
If you talk to players like Dame and Grant, they all still fully believe in Chauncey. I think he has a lot of work to do. He’s still pretty inexperienced. I do think there will be some changes on his staff. I know you that David Adkins, their director of player development, isn’t going to be back. I think there are going to be other changes coming. His lead assistant Scott Brookswas in the mix for the Bucks’ job. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in Houston if James Harden goes back there because they have a relationship from back in the Oklahoma City days.
I think there will be some changes on the staff to maybe bring in some more experienced guys to help Chauncey along… I think the feeling in the organization is they still want to give him a shot with a real competitive roster. If they do make the roster moves that they want to make this summer and they go into next season underperforming, then I think, at that point, maybe they start looking at the head coaching position.

Reddish is interesting. I could see that going either way. They like what they saw out of him… I think that one will come down to the number. I can’t imagine there will be much of a market for him in restricted free agency because the Knicks didn’t really find a lot at the deadline when they tried to move him, and he was thrown in with the Josh Harttrade for that first-round pick, which was really Portland’s motivation. I look at the deal that Nassir Littlesigned when he did his extension of four years, $28 million, which is a pretty below-market deal for guy’s signing a rookie extension. If they can get Reddish back for something like that or a deal with a bunch of partial guarantees, I think that’s something they’d be open to. I don’t think they’d commit much money to him.
