Contingencies: Connelly did not give hard pursuit to any other true point guards available earlier this summer to bolster the depth at the position. One big reason for that: Anthony Edwards. The Wolves want the ball in his hands a lot, and there will be plenty of times this season when he is forced into the lead playmaker role, which they hope will help him develop beyond his strengths as a scorer. Nowell’s creativity and bucket-getting potential give him an edge over anyone else in the bench group. Another quiet reason for optimism? Nowell shot 39.4 percent from beyond the arc last season on 2.6 attempts per game. If he can shoot close to that on higher volume, Beasley’s absence will not be felt as much. If he cannot, that is why Connelly brought in Forbes, a career 41 percent shooter from long range. And if Nowell struggles on defense, as Finch has said limited his playing time in the past, the coach can go to Rivers for a more experienced, tough perimeter presence.
