Players: Karl-Anthony Towns, Anderson/Prince, Eric Paschall, Luka Garza
The starter: I have to admit, writing “power forward Karl-Anthony Towns” feels weird after seven seasons at center. It will be one of the league’s most fascinating experiments. If it works, it could change how the entire league looks at roster construction. But here’s the thing: The Wolves have kind of already done it before. Towns has spoken about his experience playing next to Willie Cauley-Stein at Kentucky, but he also played next to Gorgui Dieng and Taj Gibson in Minnesota. And despite the public address announcer saying, “starting at center, No. 32, Karl-Anthony Towns,” he functioned as the four in so many of those lineups. Gibson and Dieng often guarded the center. Towns’ shooting allowed both to set up shop on the block or the elbow. We will probably see the same thing with Gobert. This feels both new and familiar at the same time. One immediate difference: Towns’ 4.9 3s per game last season were his lowest volume since 2018-19. Expect that to jump back up much closer to the 7.9 he attempted in 2019-20.

The Wolves will miss Beverley’s fiery leadership, but the Wolves believe Gobert, at 30 years old, will hold teammates accountable and back it up on the court.

It’s just hard to see much room for him with the addition of Gobert, and the expectation that Finch will play big stretches of games with one of Towns and Gobert on the floor after the initial burst of the starting five. Reid is a skilled player who has grown his game and reshaped his body over the last three years. He may just be a victim of circumstance.

Deep bench: Knight also has earned big respect within the team for his work ethic and attitude. But he finds himself in a battle for a roster spot in training camp. He plays bigger than he is, studies the analytics to find the best shots to be effective and has a swagger about him even though he hasn’t played much in games. As of right now, he could just be injury insurance. But if he needs to get thrust into time because of an injury, the coaching staff has confidence he will be ready.
Primary concern: For all the talk about Gobert not being a scorer, our Jazz beat writer Tony Jones told me that he worries Gobert won’t get enough touches in a lineup with Towns, Edwards and Russell. He is not a player who will be happy taking just a few shots and setting a bunch of screens. How Finch keeps all the mouths fed will be a delicate balance.
