Trae Young reacts to The Athletic's Hawks beat reporter calling a Twitter user broke for not having a subscription: “Who says this? I ain’t buying that article… what that make me?🤔🤡 #NextQuestion”

Yup, super childish of him but speaking as someone who knows what it's like to be broke, I was actually more offended by his "broke" comment than the reading comprehension quip. What a douche.

Childish and completely out of touch with his audience. Privilege does exist in this world. The “broke” comment just reeks of entitlement. Good job to Trae for using his platform in a way that truly matters. Many are afraid to rock the boat with media and he stood up and called this clown out in an important way.

Especially if they write for a subscription-only service like the Athletic. They absolutely need people to pay for their subscription, why would you alienate people? I appreciate beat writers that actually engage with fans on Twitter, and I can even appreciate a snippy back-and-forth (because most beat writers probably get the same shit over and over and over again). But I would tread very lightly about calling people out over money when you need subscribers. Part of the twitter engagement (whether you like it or not) should be that of a salesman, and saying "Just say you're broke" is not selling your journalism all that well.

I don't know much about Chris Kirschner, but I generally hate it when sports journalists develop a persona of weird elitism. I'm talking about the type of journalist that believe they know more than the professional athletes, coaching staff, front office and fans they cover/provide coverage for. It breeds a mutual level of contempt between the journalist and the rest of the world. Yet they usually also end up with a weird fanbase of readers who prefer them. But I've never vibed with that style.

I can't find the clip, but there was a reporter (I think for the LA Times) who would always get into it with Kobe, and Kobe's dismissing him about something, and says "You think you know more about this than me?" and the reporter is like "You'd beat me in a game, but I think I know more about basketball, yeah."
[-]titleywinker
“Kobe, I know how I would define it, but how would you define Mamba mentality? And are you sure you have it?”
[-]offensivename
It's certainly possible for a journalist who really goes all-in on studying a sport to understand certain concepts related to that sport better than an athlete who plays it for a living. But Kobe Bryant is not the athlete to make that kind of claim against. The guy was a voracious student of the game, not some dumb jock with all the physical tools and no knowledge.
