How will the 2019 off-season impact the Suns?由NBA集锦屋 发表在PlanetOrange https://bbs.hupu.com/687
Most of the Phoenix Suns fan base has been in support or frustrated with the state of the team. Trading back in a weak draft, using cap space on a player, trading a future pick, a 2017 top-5 pick can do that. The last trade stinks the worse when that pick and Eric Bledsoe could have brought Kyrie Irving to the desert. So, Suns fans should be objective and hold the leaders making roster moves accountable. Here's the issue I have with the Suns fans who are upset about skipping the Jarrett Culver or Coby White experiment and the rest of the roster decisions, the Suns suck! There is logic to get a player who has potential and good size, however when the team sucks, you get actual NBA PLAYERS!
Prior to James Jones anointment as the general manager, Ryan McDonough played a safe route that any fans could have done. Lets do a quick recap:
- Flipped Marcin Gortat, Shannon Brown, K-Butter (Kendall Marshall), and Malcolm Lee for a 2014 protected lottery pick and Emeka Okafor's contract. McDonough claimed it to be the best draft in a decade.
- 3-team trade that sent Dudley to the Clippers and brought back Mini-Lebron (Eric Bledsoe)
- Flipped Luis Scola to the playoff hungry Pacers who had an underperforming Gerald Green and sweetened the pot with another 2014 first round draft pick (eventually became Bogdan Bogdonavic)
- Ran into luck and found a gem in PJ Tucker.
- Traded Goran and Zoran Dragic to the Heat for their 2017 and 2021 first round picks.
- Traded Isaiah Thomas for Marcus Thornton and a 2016 Celtics pick
- Traded picks 13 and 28 in the 2016 NBA draft and the rights to Bogdan Bogdonavic for a nice preview of Marquese Chriss
- Last but not least, traded Eric Bledsoe because he didn't want to be a Sun anymore.
Ryan McDonough did draft Devin Booker, but does he deserve credit? Look at all the guys drafted after him, they weren't that appealing. I suppose we should give him credit for trading away all the actual NBA players who got the team to win 48 games to eventually be the worst team in the league for FIVE straight years. That did get the Suns the #1 pick and draft Deandre Ayton. Digging a bit more, after half a season, Devin Booker was already known to be a straight killer on the court. McDonough made no effort to build around his young star. In comparison to Donovan Mitchell's rookie year, the Jazz shifted their focus on Mitchell after losing Gordon Hayward and began building around him instead of tanking for another once in a generation talent. This goes back to why didn't the Suns just invest in Booker and trade for Kyrie Irving in the first place?
In Devin Booker's four full seasons with the Suns, Booker had a point guard for roughly a full season. McDonough failed to build a competent roster around Booker. This leads me to the roster moves made by James Jones. As crazy as it seems, Josh Jackson just did not fit with the Suns. His ambitions were to be a star and he was too inefficient and ineffective in a Suns uniform. Trading De'Anthony Melton along with two second round picks to the Grizzlies was just the cost of doing business, the sacrificial lamb, whatever etc.. What were we sacrificing? ROSTER BALANCE. Trading Jackson, pick 6 in the 2019 draft and Warren to the Pacers brought the Suns some wiggle room to sign players. Those Players even though some were acquired by trade, (lets consider them off-season signings still) were Ricky Rubio, Aron Baynes, Cameron Johnson, Ty Jerome, and Frank Kaminsky. Hopefully Kelly Oubre joins the ride as well. With or without Oubre the Suns have a complete roster with 3 seasoned NBA players and possibly 4 if Oubre signs.
The future moves of James Jones will still have the same focus. Providing a team of depth and experience around at least one known star in Devin Booker. The verdict is still out on Deandre Ayton to most of the NBA landscape, however just from his rookie season the talent will be demonstrated by Ayton in his sophomore season. So cheer up Suns fans and see the brightside! Or else..... We could run the team like Ryan McDonough and dare I mention Lon Babby and Robert Sarver?
