2012: Luka Modric named as the 2nd worst LaLiga signing behind Alex Song
2018: Luka Modric wins Ballon d'Or

The only possibility
[–]miamibuckeye 1783 points 6 hours ago*
How is it possible that we have gotten to the point where Messi is underrated
[–]Nouca 684 points 5 hours ago
Journalists overrating other players to stop the Ronaldo/Messi hegemony.
[–]poisonmonger 1717 points 6 hours ago
I cannot cope up with the fact that Griezmann has finished above Messi
[–]LinXcze 845 points 6 hours ago
Does Messi dab? No, here you go.
[–]EnergetikNA 131 points 7 hours ago
Griezmann and Mbappe ahead of Messi, Neymar 12th, KDB only 8th, Rakitic 18th lol
[–]fareswheel65 57 points 5 hours ago
Dont forget pogba and benzema are both on the list ahead of Lewandowski
[–]upcandyy 380 points 7 hours ago
Griezmann in 2018:
Leads Barca on for months making them think he’s going to join them
After months of hype of his arrival, rejects them through Pique’s own production company
Scores and helps eliminate Messi from the World Cup
Wins the World Cup
Finishes ahead of Messi in Ballon D’or rankings
The L was for Barcelona fans all along
[–]Jelboo 465 points 6 hours ago
Messi never ever ever should end in fifth place in this. I try not to care but this makes me care. What a stupid ranking.
[–]locust098 144 points 5 hours ago
I agree. Ronaldo or Messi should have won it. They’ve both been gods since they played and Messi at 5th is a fucking disgrace.
[–]HL07 445 points 6 hours ago
smh where's Fellaini
[–]randomperson2704 263 points 6 hours ago
Gods don't need the awards meant for mere mortals
[–]Selgin 119 points 6 hours ago
Messi, Ronaldo and Fellaini didn't attend. You may be on to something.
[–]XeroVeil 43 points 6 hours ago
Lord Bendtner has been absent for years!
[–]falseneinn 169 points 6 hours ago
Sneijder, Xavi and Iniesta died for this
[–]MikesterN7 1150 points 6 hours ago
I like him, but if you look back on the year and ask yourself who the best footballer of 2018 was, there's no way the answer is Modric
[–]33papers 279 points 6 hours ago
The world cup is very heavily weighted in the award it seems .
[–]Sw3atyGoalz 175 points 5 hours ago
It was even pretty arguable as to whether or not he was the best player at the World Cup as well.
[–]dreamsofutopia 93 points 5 hours ago
I thought Hazard was clearly better though maybe that's just me
[–]JohanKaramazov 13 points 5 hours ago
I think Hazard was better too, but I like Chelsea so I might be a bit biased.
[–]alpha_prophet 375 points 6 hours ago
When 2 best players in the world do not attend the ceremony, it speaks to how little value the award has.
[–]8Ding 202 points 5 hours ago
Also Neymar was just casually streaming COD on twitch rather than attending that shit show...
[–]ItsKBS 1037 points 7 hours ago
I like Modric a lot but what the fuck
[–]Masterofknees 241 points 7 hours ago
Yeah, I'm happy for him because he's a good guy and sets a great example, if not Messi or Ronaldo then I'm happy it's at least someone like him.
But seriously, the competition should still have been narrowed down to those two, World Cup year or not they're still by far the best players in the world. Modric 3rd would have been fair.
[–]JoeyBulgaria 289 points 7 hours ago
At the end of the day, he had a brilliant year.
At the same time, voter fatigue exists.
His win is for a combination of the two I think
[–]AyanC 552 points 7 hours ago
Sneijder got robbed.
[–]UsernameReIevant 146 points 7 hours ago
Yea him and Ribery should be top 2, this award is a joke
[–]Varnagel_1 164 points 7 hours ago*
Diego Milito was Inter's POTY, Serie A'S POTY and UEFA's POTY, but was excluded from Ballon d'Ors 23 ranking.
That's an even more embarrasment than Sneijder not winning Ballon d'Or 2010.
At least, Ribery was Bayern's best player in their treble season and won BuLi's POTY & UEFA's POTY.
[–]Deathr4ze 369 points 7 hours ago
It is hard to say what was more embarrassing, the results of the vote or the whole ceremony. What a circus.
[–]LosTerminators[S] 253 points 7 hours ago
The ceremony was worse haha
Asking Hegerberg to twerk
Mispronouncing Modrić as "Lukas Modrić"
[–]JeebaRock 108 points 7 hours ago
The moment the Ballor d'Or lost all its credibility
[–]JackVS1 1049 points 9 hours ago*
Griezmann above Messi
I too have brain damage.
[–]NationalAnswer7 3145 points 11 hours ago
Messi below Mbappe, what the fuck hahahahaha
[–]Mamma-Mia-La-Bestia 951 points 11 hours ago
Same reason that Ronaldo finished 6th in 2010. The World Cup happened
[–]Vagabond21 264 points 10 hours ago*
It's crazy that it's given so much weight when it comes to voting. At best it's just a span of 7 games for a player, for most it's 3 or 4. 7 games in a regular season isn't even 1/5th of a season.
EDIT: To go further, in those 7 games you might at best play 3-4 really good teams once as opposed to a regular season where you can play 3-5 really good teams twice (6-10 games) and even more better teams in Champions League.
[–]doctorfunkerton 315 points 10 hours ago
I kind of don't mind it.
It's the biggest tournament and only happens 4 years.
I like it to have more weight than the same players stomping teams with the backing of their superclubs year after year
[–]LuLujan 214 points 9 hours ago*
What about players like Aubameyang who have little chance to even compete in WC? Not saying he deserves to win BDO but imagine he chose to play for France, he could easily have finished top 15 in rankings this year. But he chose to play for Gabon to honor his parents even though he was born in France, I dont think players should be punished for that.
[–]SmithyPlayz 2064 points 11 hours ago
Remember guys 4 weeks vs. a whole season.
各位记住了，这就是4周 vs 一整个赛季。
[–]calmdwnnchill 815 points 10 hours ago
And anything from August -December doesnt count, fuck those months.
[–]madca_t 767 points 11 hours ago
Still don't understand why people value the Ballon d'or so much
[–]kplo 534 points 11 hours ago
For real. We have 2 aliens and the rest play catch up, doesn't really matter what the awards say.
[–]KiaraAshley 960 points 11 hours ago
Lewandowski doesn't even make the list but benzema firmino cavani and mandzukic all do
[–]Hsjak500 689 points 11 hours ago
Benzema especially lmao
[–]udiniad 379 points 11 hours ago
Because France won the world cup.
[–]【FC Barcelona】azureyjae 804 points 12 hours ago

[–]MagneticWoodSupply 287 points 9 hours ago
I’m just going to leave this here
[–]Ceftiofur 834 points 12 hours ago*
The fact that griezmann almost surpasses Ronaldo says all about this award.
Edit: It goes without saying that Modric winning, and Messi being 5th also undermines the credibility of the Ballon d'Or.
[–]NationalAnswer7 533 points 12 hours ago
The fact that Pogba is above Rakitic lol...
[–]ReddevilsWorkAccount 253 points 12 hours ago
They were so sick of Ronnie and Messi winning it every year they decided to make it into a joke award
[–]bustedracquet 403 points 12 hours ago
Messi 5th? Behind Mbappe? Hazard over KDB? WTF.
[–]SshibumXZ 370 points 12 hours ago
Hazard over Kevin de Bruyne makes some sense at least. But, Messi being fifth is inexcusable.
