Jeremy Lin: "When I was a rookie, I owned one pair of jeans. Monta Ellis noticed that so a week later, he bought me 20 pairs of jeans, each $200. People didn’t always agree with Monta, but I will always remember that was doing things the right way.”

Monta will always be a Warrior to me.
Despite all the success these current Warriors have had, Monta is always the first guy I think of when I think of the Warriors. Probably because he was “the” guy for the Dubs when I was beginning to watch basketball more and more.
Can’t forget about fucking Biedrins either
[–]Byaaah 267
What about Jason Richardson and Baron Davis?! 8th seed squad!
Upvote for Baron. And Azubuike
[–]New Jersey NetsMikeOrtiz 355
Put some respect on Jason Richardson
those early 2000s dunk contests got me into basketball. J-Rich has a permanent place in my heart for that, and is the first guy that comes to mind when I think of the Warriors.
[–]Braavosassasin 133
I stopped watching basketball for a few years and when I started watching again I saw curry and thought for a second "huh. Monta looks a lot different."
Dude put up like 25 a game on year and didn't make the all star team
Obligatory Monta handshake gif
I wonder if Lins experience with Monta made him love coming up with complicated handshakes with team mates.
That's cool, but this is my Monta all time top highlight.
[–][GSW] Stephen Currydiskopo 1542
I love Steph, but I always have to point out that Monta was the one who originated the tunnel shot Steph does before home games. That's Monta celebrating after making one.
[–][GSW] Sarunas Jasikeviciushamburgl4r 353
miss me some monta, still got my white Monta Jersey
I found a real GSW fan
Does bandwagoning the Baron Davis warriors count?
I remember those days lmao against the mavs especially. As a kid I was so confused I thought "who tf are the warriors??" then Davis started dunking all over the place
In an alternate universe Monta doesn't mess up his ankle on a moped, try to cover it up, and is retained by the Warriors.
And the warriors suck
Yea, Monta was basically the epitome of a guy you don't want being your best player in this analytical era
[–][UTA] Andrei Kirilenkobeefdog99 549
The season before the moped incident he an extremely efficient scorer (58% TS vs league average ~53%) to the tune of 9WS. While he couldn't make the threes you wanted, dude basically lived at the hoop pre-injury (higher % of shots at rim than RW/LBJ) and those guys are always valuable.
Wait best player? Yeah that's fair.
[–][PHI] Allen IversonMagicZombieCarpenter 264
Yeah but 26 teams have a best player you wouldn’t want as your best player...
[–][BOS] Semi Ojeleyeojeleye_superfan 133
What are the 4 teams for you? I feel like I could think of more than that honestly
Houston - Harden
Spurs - Kawhi
Cleveland - Lebron
New Orleans - Davis
Warriors - Warriors
Bucks - Greek Freak
I think you could debate westbrook lillard wall and kyrie too
Utah - Mitchell
NYK - Unicorn
6ers - Embiid
Twolves - Butler
Denver - Jokic
Stretch: Griffin, Booker, Derozan, Oladipo
Warriors - Warriors
I don't really want Westbrook on my team if I want to win a title. And Wall is my favorite player, but I don't see a team with him as the center piece winning a title. I feel the same way about Lillard
The Hawks don't even have a guy I 'd be comfortable with as my 6th best player
Sucks that his legacy is going to be boiled down to "the dude they ditched for curry"
Seems like a cool dude and a fun player :/
[–][CLE] Matthew DellavedovaSCMAD 1028
Lol thought you were talking about Lin since he was on the Warriors summer league team as a rookie
He was actually on the Mavs’ Summer League team that year and gained recognition when he played well against John Wall. He continued to play well and signed a contract with the Warriors for their main roster after that IIRC
[–]NBAwhy_rob_y 220 指標 10小時前
Lin was there for the regular season as well. I saw him in a preseason game in my only time in Oakland!
I liked him a lot in Dallas. He never saw a shot he didn't like that's for damn sure
I think it really depends on what teams you follow. To me, a huge part of Monta's legacy were his two best seasons with the Mavs. Dude crushed it and honestly is one of Dirk's top 3 teammates. If they had a deeper roster, they could have done some serious damage.
Edit: okay top 3 is an exaggeration but the guy doesn't get his due. At their prime, Finley, Howard and Nash were better and in a comparable way. JET had some crazy clutch moments but I think you can realistically compare regular season Monta to regular season JET and it's a toss up. I know that's heresy but Monta's skill combined with durability and his chemistry with Dirk were really underrated for his time with the Mavs.
I loved Monta through his whole career, but he definitely isn't one of Dirk's three best teammates (if you're judging based on basketball skill alone).
[–][TOR] Tracy McGradyWelfare_Mom 608
Somebody sign that man. Even Ty Lawson had a contract last season with the Wizards.

Ty Lawson had a contract last season with the Wizards.
Shit somehow I completely missed this

[–][CLE] Matthew DellavedovaCP3Splash 360
I dont know why but I read this as if were an excerpt for a eulogy. I checked to see if Monta Ellis had died
[–]Softestpoop 1031
Plot twist, Jeremy Lin only had one pair of jeans, but 100's of pairs of slacks/trousers. Monta Ellis got scammed.
[–]GrizzliesGT_86 378 指標 10小時前
Yep, Lin immediately sold each pair for $220
[–]Pistonspoo_pon_shoo 150 指標 10小時前
Monta got fleeced
[–]Pohlow 259
I get what he is saying, but 20 pairs of 200$ jeans ain't doing things the right way
Yeah why not 200 $20 jeans?
That’s a nice story and all but Jeremy Lin signed a 2 year $1.23M deal as a rookie. Why did he own only one pair of jeans?
E: all you guys saying he was being financially responsible as if we were talking about a car or something. We’re talking about a second pair of jeans wtf
I can afford more than 1 pair of jeans and yet here I am. Just got the one pair
Nice try broseph but i'm not gonna buy you 20 more pairs
He's a notoriously frugal person. Remember he slept on Landry Field's couch during Linsanity
he's a certified frugal asian.
source: am frugal asian.
[–]HornetsSpecialK_714 144 指標 11小時前
pretty sure it was his brother's couch lol
Before the first game of linsanity, he couldn't stay at his brother's house who was having a party i think, and had to ask landry field if he could stay at his place ( cf. Documentary Linsanity)
[–]NetsRed_Lightning 329 指標 11小時前*
It was an unguaranteed deal like most undrafted players. 2 year 1.23M only meant that's how much you would get if they kept you the entire 2 years. They can cut you mid season before the contract guarantee deadline and you would only get what you earned.
Lin was cut from the Warriors a week into training camp of year 2 so he only got paid around 500,000 of that contract in the end.
Also - Lin and his parents struggled financially in the tail end of college going into his NBA career. His parents were dealing with unemployment for a while and he played at Harvard which didn't do sports scholarships so he really did live as a regular starving student for a year upwards.
As anybody who's ever been a poor starving student can attest to... Those cheapskate habits you develop during that time take a LONG time to go away.
Considering he had no idea if that was the last nba cheque it would make perfect sense he would be extremely frugal
Edit: holy shit at the drama I don't think that buying jeans even with his unknown stats would be that much of an ask but I could understand why he simply did not want to spend money on any non crucial expense.
Exactly. Everyone in here saying “spend that money” is probably not empathizing too well with Lin’s mentality that year.
[–]Masziii 1014
Dude jeans are like 40/50 dollar by a decent brand. It's not like if you get a 1,23 mil dollar paycheck for 2 years you cant afford 2 more jeans.
dude you can get 2 pairs of Levis for 60 bucks at macys. I'm not making a fraction of the 600k he made annually and I can still afford that. Cheap is cheap.
Also at what around 20 years old with 1.2 million even if he never plays in the NBA with a Harvard education too he already has a great head start. Don't give me that it makes perfect sense shit.
