[Pelton] Pelton mail: Is Blake Griffin the
new Carmelo Anthony?
……I'm guessing it's along the lines of
both players not being good enough to build consistently successful teams
around them as first options. And if that's the case, it's probably a
reasonable analogy, because what Carmelo Anthony and Blake
Griffin share in common is that both have been paid like superstars while
producing at a lower level than that.
……Unfortunately, that looks like it could
be Griffin's fate on his new contract. He's making the league's fifth-largest
salary this season, and while other players might surpass him, Griffin's share
of the salary cap figures to increase with 8 percent year-to-year raises for
the life of his five-year deal. Even the most optimistic assessments of a
healthy Griffin don't put him among the NBA's top five players, and at nearly
29 (he'll be blowing out the candles next week), Griffin is likely to trend the
wrong direction in terms of production -- very similar to how Anthony aged with

I think the player comp isn't great
(although if you squint you can kindddd of see it).
The comparison is good in the reasons that
Pelton states -- mainly, players who are a solid notch below superstar level
production, getting paid at superstar levels. From the article:
paying a player who is not quite a superstar like one of the league's best
players makes it difficult (though, as 2012-13 proves, not impossible) to win
big because that's such a big part of the team's financial investment.
Unfortunately, that looks like it could be
Griffin's fate on his new contract.
There really isn't anything about play
style in the KP piece. Although again, I think you can see vague similarities.
Defensively limited, take a lot of jumpers, bigger guys with a handle (I know
Carmelo started out as a SF, but by the later stages of his career was/is
basically a PF).

before KD became a free agent I wanted to
see OKC flip him for Blake. KD + CP3 would be awesome, aaaaand Russ + Blake
would've been a frigging sight to behold for a totally different reason.
Now that I think about it, OKC should try
to flip Melo for Blake somehow

I’d laugh into a coma if Detroit somehow
[–]Knicksbadquarter 68 指標 8小時前
For those not reading the article, they are
saying they're similar in terms of production based on salary. Eg. Two of the
biggest salaries in the NBA while not being superstars.
The same could be said for a few more max
contract players though.

I mean I’d take Blake over melo
[–][HOU] Patrick BeverleyHarden-Soul 28 指標 3小時前
But would you take Blake over Melo 6 years
ago? Because that's the comparison
[–]ThunderLukeDogg90 30 指標 3小時前
Honestly I just want the thunder from 6
[–]Knicksteamorange3 12 指標 8小時前
It blows my mind. When healthy he is a PF
who can bring up the ball, attack the rim, pass the ball, rebound well, and is
an exciting player to watch. I really don't get why he doesn't have more fans.
[–]WeRightHere 26 指標 6小時前
He is exciting and very talented but not
all that impactful. He doesn't defend or rebound and has zero leadership.

I think Blake comes out next year and has a
great season beside Drummond. Averaging 25/8/6 or something. Then everyone here
acts like they believed in him all along.

Homer opinion obviously, but this is pretty
much how I feel. I think people forget that we might have the most pathetic
batch of healthy point guards in the league right now. I love Ish Smith and he
is a good backup, but he is pretty much the worst PG to pair next to
Drummond/BG. Reggie Jackson isn't perfect either, but we looked to have 4th
seed potential before his ankle sprain.
I'm excited to see what those three can do
together. Overall I think it was a little ridiculous to expect us to be any
good directly after the BG trade.

Blake's last full season in LA was 22/8/5,
49% FG% and that was his age 27 season, playing with Chris Paul. It's not going
to get better than that.
I think he'll be fine. He'll probably put
up the counting stats, his efficiency will probably take a hit. He'll probably
be an all-star, but as the piece states, at ~$35mil/year over the next 5 years
that's almost definitely a negative value contract.
This is why the Melo comp (in turns of
contract) is good. When people say that Melo sucked in NY, they didn't really
mean he wasn't good at basketball. He was an all-star all those years, did as
good as he could with bad players, etc. But the issue was he was getting paid
like a top 10 superstar, when really he was nowhere near that level, so it
makes it hard to talk about his performance in a vacuum, without the weight of
the contract coming into play.

tbh i think a george hill/mike conley would
do wonders for you guys (w/o the huge salary)
[–]PistonsRomeluBukkake 26 指標 8小時前
I’d kill for mike Conley tbh
[–]Redditforever12 14 指標 7小時前
you would, but not for that salary
[–][BOS] Eddie HouseShinySuitTheory 17 指標 7小時前
Are you placing Mike Conley and fucking
George Hill on the same tier?
Thank you for providing more ammunition for
the "Mike Conley is underrated" argument
[–]BullsCubsfan5ever 57 指標 10小時前
I hadn’t thought about it like that before
but I don’t think it’s a bad comparison
131 指標 10小時前
Blake is a much better passer, but in terms
of salary/value he’s not too far removed from later stage Melo.
[–]PM_me_3_good_things 164 指標 10小時前
I think they mean his career arc in
general. Because current Blake is still way better than current Melo
28 指標 9小時前
No for sure, I was comparing Blake to Melo
(like 3-4 years ago)
[–]Warriorsbelizeanheat 11 指標 8小時前
Carmelo Anthony actually has post moves.
