John Gabriel enters his 20th season in the NBA, and has
been with the Magic organization since its inception into the
NBA13 years ago. He was promoted to the General Manager
post on April 29, 1996 after serving as the club’s Vice President
of Basketball Operations/Player Personnel since January of
1994. He previously served the organization as Director of Player
Personnel, Director of Scouting, and Assistant Coach.
The architect of the re-launching of the Magic, Gabriel made 55
transactions involving 51 different players from June 14, 1999 until August 15, 2000, while acquiring
perhaps the most important free agent of all: Head Coach Doc Rivers, the NBA’s Coachof-
the-Year in 1999-2000. The results of Gabriel’s plan: a berth in NBA Playoffs 2001, while
having as many as nine first round draft picks between 2001 and 2004. Gabriel was named
the NBA Executive-of-the-Year in 1999-2000.
During the summer of 2000, Gabriel spearheaded the signing of two of the most coveted
free agents available in five-time All-Star Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady. In addition, Gabriel’s
roster/salary cap management also allowed Orlando to return the nucleus of its league-acclaimed
“heart and hustle” crew from 1999-2000.
As General Manager, Gabriel oversees all of Orlando’s Basketball Operations, while handling
contract negotiations. He also oversees the Scouting Department, while conducting the
team’s draft responsibilities.
Gabriel was responsible for building the Magic roster that went to the 1995 NBA Finals, when
the organization had only been in existence in the NBA for six years. Orlando has posted nine
consecutive seasons with a .500-plus record, while making six postseason appearances.
He has been very instrumental in the Orlando Magic draft selections over the past 12 years,
while handling the 1989 NBA Expansion Draft. Gabriel guided the organization in the re-signing
of the 1998-99 NBA Most Improved Player and Sixth Man of the Year Award winner, Darrell
Armstrong. In addition, two Magic draft picks in 1998-99 - Matt Harpring and Michael Doleac
- earned 1998-99 NBAAll-Rookie honors. Undrafted Chucky Atkins also earned NBAAll-Rookie
honors in 1999-2000. In 2000-01, Orlando’s first round selection, Mike Miller was named the
NBA’s Rookie of the Year and was the only rookie unanimously selected to the NBA All-Rookie
First Team.
Over the past 12 years, Gabriel has spent countless hours on the road, evaluating
prospects in the NBA, CBA, college, and international levels. He also coordinates the club’s
rookie/free agent camps.
Gabriel’s formula for success involves die-hard dedication, never-ending enthusiasm,
hard work, heart and hustle.
Gabriel played point guard at Kutztown State University near Philadelphia, PA, where he
studied art education. Upon graduation, Gabriel served as an art teacher and held a basketball
coaching position at Harrisburg (Pa.) Trinity High School. He also ran his own landscaping
business, before joining the Philadelphia 76ers in 1982 where he served in a number of
capacities, including serving as a video scout.
Gabriel’s first year with the Sixers (1982-83) was also the same campaign in which
Philadelphia captured the NBAWorld Championship title. Gabriel progressed in Philadelphia’s
operation, serving as a front office executive, scout and assistant coach. Former Philadelphia
General Manager and Magic executive Pat Williams brought Gabriel to Orlando to help build
the Magic in 1987 - two years before the team started.
Gabriel and his wife, Dorothy, have two daughters, Amelia (9) and Meredith (5), and one
son, Jack (born Dec. 21, 1999). They reside in Winter Park, Fla.
