TER STEGEN (4) Nervous. Perhaps could have done more not the goals, but difficult to blame him. However, he did not look comfortable and is not able to keep Barça in games.
PIQUE (5) Appeared desperate in several phases of the game. Struggled with the pressure from Juve, especially in the first 20 minutes. Was better when Barcelona played with a back four, although it was constantly changing.
UMTITI (5) A discrete performance, moved into the middle of the defence by his manager for the shipwreck which was the first half. Better in the second period when on the left.
MATHIEU (1) Another frustrating game. Played as the third defender, on the left, and was too far away from Juan Cuadrado for the first Juve goal. The Serie A side targeted his side. Alba, presumably, couldn’t believe it, sat on the bench. Taken off at half-time for Andre Gomes.
MASCHERANO (4) Will have nightmares because team-mate Dybala gave him problems. Second goal clearly his fault as he arrived late and for the third he was bettered in the air by Chiellini. A game to forget.
RAKITIC (5) Did not look comfortable. In the second half he improved, but his contribution was anecdotal. In fact, he wasted a couple of good chances to cross the ball, finding the stands.
INIESTA (4) Had the 1-1 at his feet after a genius assist rom Messi, but missed it. Had two more chances, but didn’t hit the target. Did not perform the role required of a leader.
MESSI (6) Created two good chances, one for Suarez and another Iniesta, both wasted. Dropped his head in the second half at times, a sign that things aren’t going well — something which has happened too much this season.
SERGI ROBERTO (7) The only player who will return from Turin with the sensation that he gave everything on the pitch. His second half was packed with work and sacrifice.
SUAREZ (6) Ran and fought for everything, but without results. Had a clear chance, but was denied by Buffon.
NEYMAR (3) A poor performance on a bad day for Neymar. Dani Alves and Cuadrado were able to completely nullify his threat.
Another remontada... or the end of a cycle
Barça fail to learn their lesson and will need another miracle to topple Juventus
ANDRE GOMES (6) Came on the in the second half in Busquets’ role. Did things correctly, not often losing the ball.

arc-Andre ter Stegen (5.5): Didn’t have the greatest of games. Perhaps he could’ve done more on the 2nd Dybala goal but I have a feeling he was unsighted. Couldn’t do anything on the other goals though. Passing was good at times but poor at others because Juventus pressed really well. Bar one chance in the second half, he wasn’t really called into too much action.
Gerard Piqué (5): Poor start, allowed Dybala too much time and space on that first goal. Should’ve done much better. Started getting better as the game went on but he was still shaky defensively at times. He was positioned high up the pitch most of the time with Barça chasing that away goal. Passing was great, completed 92% of his passes. Managed 2 clearances and won 3 out 4 duels. Not the best of the performances defensively.
Samuel Umtiti (6.5): One of the few decent players. In the first half, he looked somewhat uncomfortable playing as a middle CB in a 3 atb. Regardless of this, he was solid defensively. Higuain wasn’t able to do much truth be told. When he moved to LCB, he picked up. His vertical passes to Suárez and Neymar did cause Juve some problems. One of these passes led to a chance created. On the goals, there wasn’t much he could do but perhaps it would’ve made more sense for him to mark Chiellini rather than Mascherano.
Javier Mascherano (3.5): Started in CDM position in Busquets’ absence and couldn’t deliver. Passed the ball well but most were just simple passes, he lacks that incisive passing between the lines that Busquets offers in every game. Poor defending on Juventus’ 2nd goal, he didn’t track back and Dybala had too much space to finish the move. In the 2nd half, he moved back as Gomes was subbed on but he had a shocker on Juventus 3rd goal. Why Barça allowed a short Mascherano to mark Chiellini on set pieces is beyond me. A game he’ll want to forget.
Sergi Roberto (4): Started on the right side but didn’t really offer much. Passed the ball well but most were safe passes and not forward thinking. Whenever he got in the final third, he usually had space because Juve were focusing on Messi, but his decision making was poor. Got dispossessed a lot of times. He had to work defensively and managed to do well in that aspect in some parts of the game but for the most part he struggled trying to defend Mandžukić. Poor performance all around.
Ivan Rakitić (3.5): Started in midfield but drifted so wide and Barça couldn’t really dominate in the middle of the pitch. I couldn’t understand his positioning, he almost played as a full time winger in this match and couldn’t do anything on the ball. He was positioned very high up that right wing and Sergi was doing the work defensively so I’m not sure what exactly was he supposed to offer in this role. Didn’t manage to complete a single cross. Awful performance but it’s hard to put the blame entirely on him because he isn’t a wide player.
Andres Iniesta (4.5): Didn’t have a great game, it must be said. He looked rusty and lacked options when he was on the ball. It wasn’t the fact he was slow on the ball, rather he got caught in possession a lot more than we are use to due to how good Juventus pressed and closed down. He should’ve scored to make it 1-1. As good as a save it was from Buffon, he should’ve scored. For me it was the game changing moment. He did improve when Umtiti was behind him rather than Mathieu but it wasn’t enough to get the away goal we needed.
Lionel Messi (7): Once again Barça’s best player on the pitch in a disappointing team performance. Very similar to Malaga game last weekend, he dropped deep, managed to create for his teammates who simply couldn’t finish. Juve marked him tightly, he was surrounded with 4 or 5 players every time but still managed to play well and create. Amazing pass to Iniesta who had to do better. Same can be said for Suárez in the 2nd half after another brilliant pass from Messi. Very disappointing that his great individual performances eventually mean nothing because the team fails to perform.
Luis Suárez (4): Very similar to Malaga game this weekend, simply had to do better in chances he had and when it comes to decision making. 4 shots and only 1 on target. His best chance came in the 2nd half after a fantastic pass from Messi, but he couldn’t finish. He tried getting involved but looked isolated for most part as Barça’s midfield, struggled, especially in the 1st half. We desperately need him to start finishing his chances for the rest of this season.
Neymar (3.5): Not a great game from the Brazilian. Though he managed to create 3 chances, he didn’t impact the game much at all. These are the sort of games where he should step up yet he didn’t do too much. Completing 2 out of 10 take ons is just awful. Juve did well to prevent him from getting many 1v1’s against Dani Alves. I honestly fail to remember anything he did that was of something to note. He was just wasteful and ghosted through the game. It is unlikely we will go through but he will now get some good rest for his stupid red card against Malaga.
Andre Gomes (6): Replaced Mathieu at HT. He was one of our better players against Juventus. It is difficult to believe but when he plays as a DM, he seems to put some really solid performances in. Defensively he was a lot better than Mascherano, he did well to prevent the cutback to the edge of the box. Winning 5 out of 6 tackles too. He helped ball circulation a lot better than Mascherano. He honestly should’ve started and it is easy to say in hindsight but Mathieu starting is asking for trouble as harsh as it sounds.
Referee *河蟹*mon Marciniak (6): The referee had some mistakes on both sides, but he was consistent with his bookings and fouls for the most part. On another day, Mandžukić and Suárez could’ve both been sent off but he was consistent with both of those decisions and they finished the game on a yellow. Some questionable offside calls but that’s down to his assistants.

Barca conceded one goal fewer than in their last away outing in the Champions League and Gerard Pique, Neymar and Ivan Rakitic managed to avoid bookings, meaning they escaped suspension from the second leg, in which they will be able to count on Busquets again
Barca have lost three of their five European away trips, only managing to win at Celtic and Borussia Monchengladbach. This season when pitted against the best teams in the continent and away from the comfort of the Camp Nou, they have fallen woefully short.
Manager rating out of 10
4 -- Although there were no easy solutions to the absence of Busquets for Luis Enrique, deploying the slow Mascherano in a role he has not played well in since the 2014 World Cup proved a disastrous decision, nearly as bad as selecting Jeremy Mathieu over Jordi Alba. He also only used one substitution, although he deserves some credit for the improvement in the second half, even if the bar was set very low.
Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)
GK Marc Andre ter Stegen, 4 -- Had one of his poorest displays of the season, caught flat-footed for the opener and beaten at his near post for the second and overall commanded his box very poorly.
DF Gerard Pique, 4 -- Was lethargic in getting across to pick up Dybala on both of the Argentine's goals.
DF Samuel Umtiti, 6 -- Was not at fault for any of the goals and tried to give some presence in the other box as Barca chased the game.
DF Jeremy Mathieu, 3 -- Thoroughly unsuitable for the job of dealing with Juan Cuadrado and so it proved as he failed to get close to the Colombian for the opening goal and looked well off the pace, embarrassingly hauled off at half-time.
MF Sergi Roberto, 5 -- Was beaten by Miralem Pjanic down his right flank for Dybala's second goal but gave a decent display going forward, always looking to make something happen even though he rarely managed to.
MF Ivan Rakitic, 5 -- Worked really hard but his occasional technical deficiencies were exposed by Juve's dynamic midfield.
MF Javier Mascherano, 3 -- Showed why he is so rarely used in the holding midfield role these days for Barca and why Argentina have suffered in the last year when they have played him there. Struggled to cope with the pace and gave a pitiful effort in trying to prevent Dybala stroking in the second and was hopelessly outmuscled by Chiellini for the third.
MF Andres Iniesta, 5 -- Tried to give Barca some control in a game where they rarely had any grip and things might have been different had he managed to beat Buffon in the first half, but he was poor defensively, like so many of his teammates.
FW Lionel Messi, 5 -- Threatened to sparkle in the first half such as with his brilliant reverse pass into Iniesta but was kept quiet for most of the game and was emphatically upstaged by his younger compatriot Dybala.
FW Luis Suarez, 4 -- Worked hard at times but was clumsy when the ball came his way and was helpless to get beyond Juve's rock-solid defence who were always alert when he came into the area. Missed a good chance to make it 3-1 as he blasted beyond Gianluigi Buffon's far post.
FW Neymar, 5 -- Juve did a superb job on the Brazilian, constricting him for most of the game and depriving Barca of one of their most important creative outlets.
MF Andre Gomes, 5 -- Barca fans must have sighed when they saw him on the sidelines to replace Mathieu at half-time but the much-vilified Portuguese did not fare too badly although he never threatened to help turn the tide in Barca's favour.
