"Ilori’s exit provides the latest example of Liverpool’s flawed transfer strategy during Rodgers’ reign prior to this summer. Out of the 24 players they brought in from 2012 to 2014, 13 of them have now either left the club or been sent out on loan.
Many of those who have been shown the door were players like Ilori who were lauded by the transfer committee rather than being deals that Rodgers was the driving force behind.
Out of the eight players who arrived at the club last summer, four have already gone with three of them – Mario Balotelli, Javier Manquillo and Lazar Markovic – viewed as committee picks.
Of course Rodgers isn’t in the business of cutting off his nose to spite his face. If he thought they were up to the task he would have kept them and played them. The bottom line is they, like Ilori, didn’t impress him, but it underlines the folly of signing players the manager isn’t 100% sold on. - Meaning they will never get a chance so why buy them in the first place?
This summer saw a change of approach from the owners who backed Rodgers’ judgement and gave him what he wanted as targets were secured early on in the window with a minimum of fuss. "
The above is an exerpt from a James Pearce article and for me sums up the issue the club has been facing the last 3 seasons and is the underlying reason for the state of the squad. Having a manager who is fighting internally as well as against other clubs will never work.
I think it is obvious Brendan is playing the 'Politics Game' and that Pearce is VERY wrong in the bold sentence above. IMO that is EXACTLY what Rodgers is doing with his management of the players brought in by the TC and why he should step aside.
Only a manager who has proved his system works should have the 'free reign' BR requires. Thus far Rodgers has failed to demonstrate he knows what his best players are or the best system to use them in for 3 seasons now and enough is enough.
With Top 4 qualification more difficult than ever and the stumbling of Man UTD currently means we simply HAVE to capitalise or we find ourselves with an even bigger mountain to climb. We failed last season, this season it should be our only priority yet here we war having to listen to BR impress that a cup and top 4 are targets. Well forget the cups Brendan they only serve to decorate cabinets and flatter ego's, they offer little to the coffers tin. They are 'Trophy' trophies and are a long way down the list below the 'bread and butter' of the PL and CL.
The biggest mistake last year was diluting the squad with 'potential' when cementing a top 4 spot was paramount. Yet here we heard BR again saying that he wanted a squad "capable of competing on all fronts". Why? He got ahead of himself and thought even without Luis the squad was capable of competing in four competitions.
Again, IMO only teams such as Chelsea and City have squads capable of being stretched to four competitions in a season. For BR to even think he had a chance was amateur, totally amateur. If he didn't agree with the signings brought in how did he think he was going to turn them into a squad capable of doing the job?
He has got himself involved in the romance and history of the club way too much and it is affecting him just like his decision to play Chelsea for a win instead of the result he needed which was a draw. Again amateur.
I could go on about his tactics and his substitutions but I think the general opinion is the same for everybody now, even his stanchest supporters of which I was one but no more.
Without dissecting his last three seasons to the eights degree which really isn't necessary to form an opinion I really do think now is the time for BR to hold his hands up and say goodbye. His job is only going to get tougher from now on now he has lost the trust of the fans.
